What Can Photographers Learn from a Model?
WHAT IS A SURPRISE INTERVIEW?
I have a series on my Youtube page that has me doing, exactly that... I surprise my entertainment industry friends with on-camera interviews. It's done in a comical way that lets me ask them questions which would help photographers become better at photography, booking jobs, and managing photo shoots.
WHY DO YOU SURPRISE YOUR INDUSTRY FRIENDS?
When I started my career in photography and directing, all I wanted to do was ask questions from those that actually held a job in the entertainment industry. How do you book photography jobs? How do you manage photography clients? How can you run a successful photo shoot? How do you market yourself for photography jobs?
See how useful the questions can be? I just wanted to learn. Even though books and videos can be educational, there's little that can compare to asking someone who actually is employed in the industry some questions. Not to sound like a broken record, but I'm doing this because there wasn't any help when I started. While I'm at it, this entire website project is because it was difficult starting my career. Before Madonna, JLo, Usher, Ricky Martin, etc... there was a confused guy with a mediocre camera looking for some insight!
CAN A PHOTOGRAPHER LEARN FROM A MODEL?
Photographs can learn a lot from models. In fact, photographers can learn from anyone on set, because everyone offers a level of insight that can prove to be useful. Models work with a number of photographers and creative teams. They see the good, the bad and the worst! Why wouldn't we ask a model's opinion to help our photography?
It would be ignorant to not pick a model's brain. Ask them! In this case, I'm asking Haley Amaya who is an accomplished model with Wilhelmina Models in LA. When we did our beauty shoot, I ask Haley a few questions. Watch the video and see how she answers them. After her answer, I give my thoughts on the same subject. Haley did a great job mentioning everything that was important.
- How can a photographer help you do better as a model?
Short Answer: Haley asks the photographer to make them feel comfortable, and say more than just a hello. Make it personal and have a conversation with them. She goes into greater detail in the video and I contribute my thoughts to her answer.
- Do you prefer that a photographer gives constant instruction or throughout the shoot?
Short Answer: She asks that photographers do both. Give them instructions that help her do the job, but also give the models enough space to do their job and create. Isn't that what we all desire?
- What can a photographer say to make you more inclined to shoot with them (via Instagram DM)?
Short Answer: Be professional and back up your request with good work. They do check feed and want to work with a professional. I speak at length about this on the video and also touch on branding yourself as a photographer. It helps to see this through the eyes of a model AND that of a hiring brand.
HOW CAN MODELS HELP PHOTOGRAPHERS MAKE MORE MONEY?
As you know, photographers are a dime a dozen. I have a camera. You have a camera. Look around, everyone has a camera! Oh man, after that realization it seems like quite a dark cloud over our heads, right?
Well for those that stay mediocre, sure. For those that strive to do better, be better, know more and help more... you will still have a job. The more you know, the more you can help your clients. Be expressive and be vocal with your skills. Make suggestions for your clients, understand what they want and what their biggest problem is.
They will likely price out a few photographers. You will likely end up being one of the more expensive ones. That's fine...good for you! There's a reason why you charge more. That's because you know more, and you're more inquisitive. All of that photography knowledge you gather, it's going to help future clients.
Models share how the photographers they love behave on set. They share the bad also. They talk about how great other photographers are, and how they give great direction on set. They'll also talk about the ones who made the day miserable. Ask these beautiful people their thoughts. Ask them what has worked for them, what they dislike and what they look forward to. Each shoot you and I should have a goal to be better.
