PHOTOGRAPHERS, HERE IS HOW TO PRICE YOURSELF
BASIC PHOTOGRAPHY PRICING TIPS
How do you price yourself? That’s the hardest part many photographers have to go through and this post will give a good skeleton structure. OK this is the preliminary way and there are other methods that should be factored in. My goal is to get you up and running ASAP, start charging your value. From there we build up and fine tune. At the end of the article I want to share how I manage my day and fit everything in, so that I can grow my business. It’s a free offer that you can have as an instant download!
The more you are in business, the more you know what works for you. Here are the basic steps. Work backwards. In order to find your rate, lets figure out how much time it takes to create your imagery.
BREAK IT DOWN INTO STEPS
STEP ONE: How many images will you give out? Multiply that by how long each image takes to post process. If it takes you 1 hour per image, is that really all that it took you? Did you factor in the time that you downloaded the images, gave them selection stars in Lightroom and even did some basic color profiles? Count that. Did you factor in how much time it takes to resize and upload for the client? Count that. When you hear people say it takes between 3-4 hours per image, that’s where the number comes from.
STEP TWO: What’s your hard cost for the shoot? Did you rent anything or hire anyone? Count all the fees and that should be factored in there, and I assume you spent about 8 hours shooting? Did you factor in set up and take down time?
STEP THREE: Count the phone calls, emails, and all the time it takes to make your mood board and everything else needed to book the client. Did you spend advertising money? That’s gotta go in the equation.
STEP FOUR: Now count the hours it takes. Lets say that it took 3 hours per image (8 images total). That is 24 hours of post. You shot for about 8 hours. That’s now 32 hours total. You probably spent 4-6 hours prepping for the shoot. You can choose to factor in wear/tear of equipment if you have that luxury, hard costs, rentals, other fees. For this equation, we’ll skip that for easier math.
A FEW OTHER THINGS:
So lets say the photo shoot was 38 hours total. That seems like a lot, but it’s not. Do inventory of how much time you spend, and then it’s almost insulting to charge a small fee.
What do you want to make per hour for your regional area? Assuming you want to make $35 per hour, that’s $1,330 that you should charge at the least. Now you can factor in camera wear & tear, ad costs, gas for your car, internet/electricity fees, etc…Now when someone calls you for a cheap shoot or something free, you say “new rates, who dis”
When you work for free, it just says to the entire market that you have no value. People talk and share. People will spread your news (even the bad news) and that’s a devastating blow to your business. Sometimes people wonder why photographers cost so much. You and I know why, but share this with them. It’ll blow their minds!
